Job Description:
A General Manager (GM) for a Power Plant within a steel manufacturing company (often a Captive Power Plant - CPP) drives operational efficiency, safety compliance, and power reliability. Key duties include managing coal procurement, optimizing fuel efficiency, achieving electricity generation targets, leading maintenance (preventive/breakdown), and ensuring environmental compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Plant Operations & Production: Oversee day-to-day operations of the Power Plant (e.g., CPP 6MW+, Boiler, Turbine, WTP, Coal Handling) to ensure seamless power supply to the steel melting shop, furnaces, and rolling mills.
- Performance Optimization: Maximize operational efficiency, optimize heat rates, and reduce auxiliary power consumption to minimize cost per unit.
- Technical Maintenance: Lead preventive and predictive maintenance schedules for turbines, boilers, and auxiliary systems to achieve high availability and reduce downtime.
- Safety & Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols, environmental regulations, and pollution control norms (stack monitoring, fly ash management).
- Operational Budgeting: Manage operational budgets (OPEX), manage fuel inventory, and control costs related to spare parts and maintenance.
- Team Leadership: Train and lead engineering teams and plant operators.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
- Experience: 15-20+ years of experience in power plant operations, with experience in a steel manufacturing captive power plant (CPP) preferred.
- Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of Boiler-Turbine-Generator (BTG) systems, coal handling plants, and Water Treatment Plants (WTP).
- Leadership: Strong decision-making, strategic planning, and team management skills.
