Job Description:
A Quantity Surveyor (QS) manages all financial and contractual aspects of building projects from inception to completion, acting as a construction cost consultant. They ensure projects remain within budget by preparing estimates, conducting feasibility studies, managing procurement, valuing completed work, and preparing final accounts to ensure value for money.
Key Responsibilities
- Cost Management & Estimating: Preparing detailed cost plans, estimates for materials and labor, and bills of quantities.
- Contract Administration: Managing, reviewing, and evaluating contracts, subcontracts, and variations (changes) to the work.
- Procurement & Tendering: Submitting tender documents, analyzing bids, and negotiating with contractors.
- Financial Reporting: Tracking project expenses, performing valuations, managing cash flow, and reporting on profitability.
- Risk Management: Identifying financial risks and advising on legal and regulatory compliance.
- Site Management: Visiting construction sites to monitor progress, verify completed work, and manage contractor payments.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Education: A degree in Quantity Surveying, construction engineering, or a related field.
- Skills: Strong mathematical, analytical, and negotiation skills, alongside proficiency in budgeting software.
- Knowledge: Deep understanding of construction methods, materials, and legal regulations.
- Certifications: Often require or prefer professional accreditation, such as MRICS (Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors).
