Job Description:
A Purchase Manager in a steel manufacturing company oversees the end-to-end procurement of raw materials (iron ore, coal, scrap, ferroalloys) and industrial consumables to ensure uninterrupted production at optimal costs. Responsibilities include supplier negotiation, vendor development, inventory management, and coordinating with production/finance teams to meet stringent quality and cost standards.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Raw Material Sourcing: Procure essential steel-making materials such as iron ore, coal, coke, scrap, and ferro alloys.
- Supplier Management: Identify, evaluate, and negotiate with vendors to secure the best prices, payment terms, and delivery schedules.
- Cost Optimization: Monitor market trends (e.g., LME, local market rates) to minimize procurement costs while maintaining quality standards.
- Order Processing: Manage the full purchasing cycle: raising purchase orders (POs), tracking deliveries, and resolving shipment issues.
- Inventory Control: Maintain optimal stock levels of raw materials and consumables to prevent production shutdowns.
- Compliance & Documentation: Ensure compliance with company policies, environmental regulations, and maintain accurate records of purchases.
- Coordination: Collaborate with production, logistics, and quality assurance teams to ensure timely delivery and material quality.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration (MBA), or related field.
- Experience: 5-10+ years of experience in procurement, specifically within the steel, iron, or manufacturing industry.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in ERP software (e.g., SAP, Oracle) and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Key Competencies: Strong negotiation skills, analytical abilities, and knowledge of import/export documentation.

- Cost reduction and cost-saving targets.
- Supplier on-time delivery rate.
- Raw material inventory turnover ratio.
- Quality compliance rates for incoming materials.
