Job Description:
A Head Unit Power Plant (or Plant Head/Unit Manager) is responsible for the overall performance of a power generation facility, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable operations. This leadership role involves managing P&L, leading operations and maintenance (O&M) teams, ensuring statutory compliance, and optimizing plant availability.
Below is a detailed job description based on typical requirements for a Head of Power Plant:
Key Responsibilities
- Operational Leadership: Ensure 24/7, safe, and efficient operation of the power plant (coal, gas, or renewable) with minimum downtime.
- Production & Efficiency: Plan power generation, optimize efficiency of boilers, turbines, and generators, and meet annual production targets.
- Maintenance Strategy: Develop and implement preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance schedules to maximize plant reliability.
- Safety & Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to safety (HSE), environmental regulations, and statutory norms (e.g., IBR for boilers, ISO standards).
- Budgeting & P&L: Manage the operating budget, control costs, and oversee procurement of fuel and spares.
- Team Management: Lead, mentor, and train cross-functional teams (Operations, Maintenance, Technical, HR) to ensure a productive work environment.
- Stakeholder Management: Liaise with regulatory bodies, contractors, and corporate offices for reporting and approvals.
- Project Management: Oversee plant expansion, modernization, and commissioning (Greenfield/Brownfield projects).
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. An MBA in Operations or Management is often preferred.
- Experience: 15–25+ years of experience in power plant operation and maintenance, with 5–10 years in a leadership role (e.g., Plant Manager or Unit Head).
- Certifications: Boiler Operation Engineer (BOE) certification is often mandatory for thermal power plants.
Knowledge & Skills
- Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of power plant processes (boilers, turbines, DCS systems, switchgear).
- Leadership Skills: Strong decision-making, crisis management, and team-building capabilities.
- Financial Acumen: Understanding of P&L management, cost optimization, and budgeting.
- Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills for managing unions and liaising with stakeholders.
